Why the “care-first” model has it backward and what Goldy is doing instead

Until now, the senior services industry has been established around a single assumption: as people get older, their world should get safer, smaller. Fewer responsibilities, risks, and activities in exchange for more safety, structure, and sitting still. It sounds appropriate on paper. In reality, it often leads to an outcome none of us actually want, a slow shrinking of independence, identity, connection, and joy.

At Goldy, we believe the industry that serves older adults was built on good intentions but rooted in the wrong perspective. Atul Gawande makes the case in his book Being Mortal. He writes that our cruelest failure in caring for the sick and the aged is not recognizing that they “have priorities beyond merely being safe and living longer.” He also argues that people need to shape their own story, on their own terms. That is exactly where care-first thinking has it backward.

This applies to retirement as a whole as well. Most people are equally concerned with how happy they will be in retirement as they are about how long it will last.

In the traditional approach, safety is often at the expense of joy.

Services for older adults have historically centered around “care.” This model is reactive rather than proactive. It primarily responds after things start to go wrong, offering support in managing chronic conditions, responding to falls, and meeting basic daily needs. All of these matter. Obviously. But we began to define success as keeping someone safe and stable, not helping someone live fully.

When safety and stability become the only goals, everything else starts to shift too far in the wrong direction:

  • Decisions get made out of fear, and made for people instead of with them, even when they are fully capable of deciding for themselves
  • We stop making room for activities that bring joy
  • Days get boring and empty

A life like that is kept safe, but the person stops thriving. Their days get managed for them instead of lived by them. How do we keep you safe and healthy today is a fair question. How do we bring more adventure, connection, and joy into today is just as important, and almost no one is asking it.

We’ve been asking the wrong question.

Most services for older adults are asking, “What does this person need help with?” It’s a logical place to start. But it leads to a narrow outcome: We fill the gaps, fix the problems, and address the deficits.

What it doesn’t ask is, “What kind of life does this person actually want to live?” Those are very different questions, and they lead to very different solutions.

Independence was and still is the goal.

Independence is talked about frequently when discussing aging. It is often defined as doing things on your own, being self-sufficient, and not needing help. We think that definition is outdated, and frankly, unrealistic, lonely, and boring. Humans were never meant to do life alone. Our brains are not even wired for that.

A better definition is having control over how you live your life. Many times, the most independent choice a person can make is to accept support, strategically. Not because they can’t do something, but because they prefer to spend their energy doing something else.

That’s not giving up independence. That’s protecting it.

The future of the aging industry is about lifestyle, not just care.

Goldy is creating a different future of the aging industry, and it looks nothing like the past. It will be more proactive than reactive, more personalized than standardized, more focused on living than limiting. We are supporting retirees in living a full, vibrant life, long before they need home care. We believe that taking this proactive approach will keep people happier and healthier longer.
