Doing Something Fun Every Day Might Be the Most Important Habit You Build in Retirement

Goldy 5 min read

Picture waking up on a Monday morning in retirement: no alarms, no stressful meetings, and absolutely no deadlines. It feels like total freedom, but within an hour of finishing breakfast, you might find yourself sweeping the deck just to have something to do.

This is the reality of retirement. While reading books and solving crossword puzzles are excellent pastimes, they shouldn’t become your primary daily routine with chores and errands simply sprinkled in. Here at Goldy, we are convinced that the most vital habit you can establish is prioritizing something genuinely fun every single day.

Fun Isn’t a Bonus in Retirement. It’s the Whole Point.

For most of your adult life, fun was squeezed in when it was convenient. Nights, weekends, vacations on occasion. Retirement flips the script. Now, fun isn’t the thing you get to do after you’re productive. It’s precisely what makes your days productive.

As it turns out, it’s doing a lot more behind the scenes than just making you smile.

Your Body Thrives on Fun

Fun and laughter might feel optional, but your body rejoices in it.

When you laugh or genuinely enjoy something:

  • Cortisol decreases (that’s your stress hormone)
  • Dopamine increases (well hello, “life is good” energy)
  • Your brain lights up and stays more engaged
  • Your overall sense of well-being increases

Over time, this adds up to:

  • better cognitive functioning
  • better memory
  • less wear-and-tear physically and emotionally, from chronic stress
  • a higher quality of life (this is ultimately the goal, right?)

So yes, that date night out at the comedy club? Good work!

“Take It Easy” Doesn’t Mean “Make Life Smaller”

Somewhere along the way, many of us absorbed the message that getting older means slowing down, being careful, not overdoing it. And to be fair, there’s wisdom in that. Taking care of your body and responding to your energy level matters. But sometimes that advice quietly turns into something else: playing it too safe, saying no a little too often, shrinking the edges of your life without meaning to. “Don’t overdo it” can slowly become “don’t do much at all.”

Making fun a priority is the best way to keep that from happening. We’re not saying you need to go skydiving on a Tuesday (unless you’re into that, and if so, of course we have a contact for you to get that scheduled!) It’s really just about staying curious and open to new things. Retirement shouldn’t mean playing it safe or shrinking your life down. It should be about choosing how you spend your time and bringing a little excitement and variety into your day.

The Sneaky Trap: “I’ll Get to That”

Most retirees have a mental list floating around: “Maybe I’ll try that class. I should call them. I’d love to get back into that.”

And yet, often it never happens. Not because you don’t care or don’t want to. It’s just that without structure, those ideas just float around. Time gets filled with sweeping the already-clean deck, and the fun stuff politely waits its turn, like it’s at the Costco optometry counter. A daily habit of fun changes that. It puts enjoyment at the top of the priority list.

What Counts as Fun (Spoiler: The Bar Is Delightfully Low)

Don’t overcomplicate this.

Fun does not need to be a big event, a production, or something worth posting about.

It can be:

  • meeting a friend for coffee and staying long enough to forget what time it is.
  • trying a new recipe and improvising like a confident cooking show contestant.
  • putting on your favorite music and dancing. Yes, dancing alone or with someone, it doesn’t matter.
  • taking a walk somewhere different just to mix things up.
  • joining a class where you’re comically bad at something new.
  • saying yes to something slightly outside your comfort zone. If you hate it, you never have to do it again. But you’ve got bragging rights for trying it.

If it makes you smile, laugh, or lose track of time for a bit, it counts.

Gold star. Done for the day.

Why Goldy Intentionally Puts Fun at the Center

At Goldy, we didn’t tuck fun into the “if there’s time” category. We built the whole model around it. On purpose. Because everything we’ve seen, and everything the science backs up, points to the same thing: when people regularly do things they enjoy, life works better. They feel better. They stay sharper. They connect more. They have more energy for everything else. They are healthier overall.

So we designed Goldy to:

  • take things off your plate that drain your time and energy
  • make it ridiculously easy to say “yes” to things you actually want to do
  • connect you with activities, people, and experiences that bring real enjoyment
  • help build fun into your everyday life, not just on occasion

We’re not just helping you stay busy. We’re helping you stay engaged, energized, and occasionally laughing so hard you forget what you walked into the room for. Which, to be fair, might have been happening anyway.

The Real Opportunity Here

What good is all this newfound time if you’re not truly enjoying it? Retirement is about having more choice. And one of the most powerful choices you can make daily and consistently is to do something that makes life feel lighter, more vibrant, and more energized. Because those small moments? They stack up.

Into better health.Better energy.Better connection.
